Poem: three forty

“I should have known better,” and

slow tears: salty tracks, a sniffle;

it’s been years since the door closed,

a mother’s love not present.

“Don’t back down, nothing can be changed,” and yet

the bright smile of his niece

transforms his day, brilliantly.

I was nominated by Aquileana to take part in a poetry challenge, and so today was a double challenge, as it’ll be my poem for NaPoWriMo too! I needed to include the word love, an adverb, and a quote or motto.

“I should have known better,” and “Don’t back down, nothing can be changed,” are quotes from the song Should Have Known Better by the supremely talented Sufjan Stevens, whose new album Carrie and Lowell is on constant repeat at the moment. Anyone who knows me will not be surprised that I picked him as my inspiration!

  1. Nicely penned, dear Rosey… I liked the way you introduced the quotes here…
    I wonder why 43, though?….
    Anyhow… sometimes only the author i.e poet knows the further anwers… 😉
    All my best wishes and thanks for taking part in the challenge with this glorious brief poem! Aquileana 😀
